A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum

A Funny Thing Poster

Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, book by Bert Shovelove and Larry Gelbart

Sondheim at his best in this hilarious musical romp throough Ancient Rome.

Inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus (251-183 BC) it tells the bawdy story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door.

It's a farce so there's a set with many doors, dreadful puns, cases of mistaken identity (frequently involving characters disguising themselves as one another), and satirical comments on social class.

It's a musical so there's some great witty numbers like "Comedy Tonight", "The House of Marcus Lycus, "Everybody Ought to Have a Maid" and "I'm Calm"

Directed by Keith Pendall who's recent successes include Little Shop of Horrors, a production which won a NODA award for Best Musical of 2007 in the eastern region.
